What is the difference between the King James and New International Version?

Is their a difference besides the KJ is more "formal" (ie: Translated from the Original Greek...)

And the KJ has a dedication to "his most high majesty, king James"

King James uses the funky English, so to speak.

The NIV makes use of modern English.

Personally, I prefer the King James version. It's a little harder to understand, but certain areas of the Bible don't seem right in modern English.

Other than that, they're no different in terms of content.

Not true. In one of my Bible classes I remember them showing us a few differences. Yes'es in one translation were no's in another. Stuff like that. I personally use King James Version.

i too prefer the king james bible. the new international version sounds too overly simplistic. a lot of the detailed discriptions are lost in the translation.

  7. The King James version, although rather complex in it's wording and language structure at times, is still the most accurate account of the bible we have available today (as far as commercially available versions of the bible). I personally prefer NIV because of the modern language and reference adaptions, but it's a well known fact expressed among theologians that the KJV is thicker with detailed accuracy.

I'm not suggesting in any form or manner that the NIV is not accurate by any account. But if you read the two side by side, you'll notice considerable differences in many ways. As with any book, the more and more it is translated or given different perspectives and angles, the more it becomes less accurate. It then becomes more of an insight into the author's personal interpretation than anything.

However, the good thing I suppose is that any version of the bible available today is never authored by just one person. It is compiled using agreed upon interpretations by a board of different scholars and authors, who then render it into it's final version after being satisfied with it's accuracy.

Sounds like a lot of mumbo jumbo, I know - lol. But I studied theology for a while. Bottom line is, go with that version works best for you, that is easiest for you to understand and personally interpret.

True, why would you burn a book?
After I read mine, I took it to the second hand book store and traded it in on another historical fiction novel.

Very true, but one wonders how much of the translation was "subjective interpretation"?

What I find fascinating is that the only reference about churches is when Jesus goes into one (tabernacle) to evict the money grubbers.

After reading that, I know why the Churches are so successful.

I have said for years, you want me to go to a church, show me in the bible where Jesus goes to a church to pray/preach and I will go.

absolutely right. i don't go to church. i worship god in my own home. like my father, he calls me a bad christian because i don't go and he does. but every sunday night he gets drunk and starts acting all crazy.
what's better, not going to church and being a good person or going to church and being a sinner?
the christian religions are the only ones that put an emphasis on having to go into a building and listen to the priest talking every sunday. it's good if you go, but i don't like it. i'm a catholic by the way.

When Jesus was twelve years old he went to church to be taught and ask questions. Although he wanted to stay, when his parents said to go home, he obeyed and went with them. Luke 2:39-52

On the day of judgment, what is better? A sinner that is a “good person” that doesn’t feel the need to repent, or a sinner who “gets drunk and starts acting all crazy” that does repent. I prefer a third choice, which is a “good person” that repents daily. The point is that all sin is sin, and we are all sinners.

While giving praise and learning scripture do occur at church and may be accomplished at home, that is not all that happens at church. We are commanded to not forsake the fellowship of believers. That means to spend time with other Christians, encourage each other, and minister (teach and give help) to each other. If you are honestly getting all of this (giving praise, teaching, and genuine fellowship) at home, then you have a point. If not, and if your parent’s church does not meet these needs, then find another Christian fellowship (church) that does. Also, different congregations (in Catholicism and in other Christian denominations) do each of these better than others and none is perfect, so find the one that has a balance that satisfies you.

By the way I have $50, can someone tell me what capture card and dvd burner to buy?

how about if this sinner does not repent beacause he does not feel as though what he is doing is sinning? i never said i was perfect. of course we all are sinners. there are some things that i have done which i have since repented. all i can do is to try to better myself.
one can spend time with other christians outside of church. it sounds as though you are saying that you can't. we must spend time with them in church and nowhere else. and by the way, this does not happen at my church. people go for the hour, then run home as quickly as possible as soon as its over.

Why does it have to be a Christian Fellowship church? Do you give no creedance to other believes?

What I meant was that if you are giving God praise, getting teaching, and having genuine fellowship without going to your parent’s church, then you do have a good point about not going to your dad’s church. Wherever two, or more, are gathered in His name, He is there also. That is your church. That does not mean getting together with friends that happen to also be Christians, but rather Christians gathered together to worship God and minister to one another. That can happen in your home, your friend’s home, or just about anywhere. Keep on seeking the lord and you will be rewarded for eternity.

Good person or bad person is irrelevant for salvation, without repentance there is none. Although if bad behavior continues, then true repentance is in doubt. But that is between God and that individual. Likewise, good behavior is not proof of repentance either.

If I said all non-Christian religions are wrong, would that make me close minded? And, if you say that I am wrong for saying that someone else is wrong, would that also make you close minded?

I am not sure what you mean by credence, but I would never disrespect anyone for their beliefs (unless they short TTWO or ATVI stock when I am long, but that is another topic). But I respectfully disagree with anyone who says that there is no heaven, or that there are multiple ways to get to heaven. Jesus says in the Bible that he is the way, the truth, and the life and that no one gets to the Father except by Him. And I believe the entire Bible. You cannot only believe in parts of the Bible, it’s all or nothing. If we have the freedom to pick and choose which parts to believe in, then you are inevitably going to pick different parts than I would, or someone else for that matter. So, it’s all or nothing. Now believing in all of it can not be explained by human reason, but is a matter of faith (and it doesn’t take much). I have always been a morally “good person” but when I accepted Jesus something besides my behavior changed. This is my proof that Jesus is who He said is. So, faith is like a mustard seed, it starts out like the smallest seed, but can grow to be the largest tree.

For me to say that non-Christian religions have even a possibility of being correct, would mean that I don’t believe Jesus when He said he is the only way. Then what other parts of the Bible might I disbelieve. Which means I would have no faith. Now, my own salvation would be in grave danger. I hope this helps explain it.

  20. Time to seek the clarity of atheism?

Note: try to keep religious discussions to a minimum in the forums. They always just turn out into flamewars on differing aspects of religious dogma.

Very true. I have two friends, one how claims to be Christian and one who is a Native Canadian. I love it when they get together for a philisophical discussion. They get each other speechless. I am then convinced that their own respective god/gods are the same. Superior extra-terrestrial life that came down to brainwash the simple masses.
