I've been coming here for about 3 months now, since i bought my philips208....and keep reading and reading and reading. *sigh*. I finally got things working, made my first Vcd and Dvd's and actually had them work. Quality isn't what I had hoped but then again the quality of the video wasn't great to start with. (recorded on older camcorder, transfered to vsh and now transferred to disk.)
So now I wonder if everything is working ok why am I still reading, trying to soak up information I might never need or use. Anyone else around here doing that ?
Terminology is confusing and gradually figuring out what some of the terms being used are. So much information, so little time.
Been reading today about tmpgenc and mpeg2, trying to understand the benefits of this format. Now understand what the terminology is but feel like theres conflicting info on benefits of mpeg2 if you have the capability of just going straight from mpeg1 to dvd. *sigh*
Guess in the end I'm trying to figure out, do i just stick with what works and not worry about the rest vs learning as much as I can about every format weather I'll use it or not, just to have the knowledge of the information. my mind is saying"error" lol

You can never know too much. Every day new technology is coming out, and every day, new information comes out about old technology.
If you feel like you have reached your limit on what you know, help others reach thier's. It's people with lots of knowledge that help the newbies.
If you feel like you just need a break from it all, then take one. But be forewarned, if you think some things are confusing now, they'll be even more later. My shameless plug - XavierEnterprises.net -

SVCD has higher resolution...seems logical
SVCD has higher bitrates (again compared with standard VCD 2.0 bitrate)
i'm not too sure, but i believe SVCD has some extra audio features like 5.1 surround or something that VCD doesn't support
however, both VCDs and SVCDs can do chapters and subtitles..so that's a plus -
Basically, if you dvd player supports SVCD then use that. otherwise you're stuck with VCD.

Thank-you for the information. that did help clarify things abit in favor of mpeg2. As far as I know one of my stand alone dvd players is suppose to play svcd not sure on the other. have checked the compatibilty list but not much information is available and from my own trial and error know dvd will work but not vcd.
This has been like learning the computer all over again. I do alot with computers and my local computer stores have been totally not helpful with any information. when i accessed tmpgenc to look the program over(just got it, haven't used it yet) noticed theres quite a selection of bit rates and suggestions on which selection is better than the others ?
I've also discovered mydvd will not capture directly from the source to dvd, seams to be compatibilty issue with dazzle usb. So will continue to capture through moviestar software. Have adobe premier 6 but will take me many more weeks to get through the help files for that program to understand it enough to use and not sure i'll be able to use it either with this dazzle.
This is what I mean about information over-load, so much to understand, and pretty much starting from scratch here.
Still haven't figuired out why I can not access dvd video option in nero 5.5.8 full version either.
Frustration, over-load, mental "error" lol
