  4. for people who are really serious about non linear video editing, 2000 is the way to go since it's proven and stable.

  5. I agree...every operation system has its advantages and drawbacks, but I tend to use win 2000 for my video stuff...I'm running XP, NT, 98, and 2000 in diffrent combinations of single boot, double boot and triple boot on my three different computers, but I know my hardware drivers and software are stable for my purposes under win 2000 and I see no real reason to use XP most of the time...thats just my opinion...I didn't upgrade to win 2000 till it had been out for a long time and I was sure the drivers for my needs would be stable...

maybe this is just in my imagination, but I still find NT and 2000 to be the quickest, most repsonsive operating systems, followed by XP and 98....maybe I'm crazy

  6. kpawley, I can't seem to find where to edit it, but i'll try, if it's possible, i'm sure one of the Moderators (or Baldrick) will be able to do so.

However, I have deleted the duplicate topic you opened (which Truman locked) and I would like to ask you not to open double posts, if you want it moved to another section, just ask.

  12. every proggie still considers win98SE when making it compatible, even though win98 may not be nearly as stable as win2000, every proggie is compatibile with win98

  13. In terms of ripping (DVD Decrypter, FlaskMPEG 0.6 subtitle fixed, Panasonic MPEG encoder plug-in, VCDImager, CDRWin) I've had no problems with WindowsXP -- and it seems more stable over Win98SE (which I also use).

As for speed, I haven't noticed any great difference.

I believe that w2000 is the way to go, but you have to consider about driver compatibility, Hardware compatibilite and lots of RAM MB. Using 128MB (like I do now...) make it very ustable with Dvd2avi/mpeg2vcr.

Windows 98SE lite is a very - very good solution, expecially with opera as an internet browser. It is stable, but when I grabb DVB transmissions from satellite, encode with tmpgenc and surf the internet, I have a few frame drops... With w2k no probs for such multitasking use
I suggest w98se Lite only if you don't grabb and encode the same time

With win XP, you need selected hardware. If your hardware is compatible with M$, then it's ok. If you use "alternative" hardware - non M$ "suggested" (like I prefer to do), then you may experience problems.
There is a service pack for WinXP, I didn't test it yet.

The last couple of weeks I start some test with Linux/mandrake distribution/KDE. For simply VCD stuff is OK, but yet ain't a choice for Video stuff in generall. Maybe in a year

Also, look at http://www.vcdhelp.com/comparison.htm for some related info.

I think Win98 is the best one. WinXP does slow down the computer; Microsoft has put too many special effects into the OS. Just set the OS as basic - without the extras for performance.

WinMe is a problem with so many errors - not good, particularly with networking. This OS is at times unreliable and have to link this computer to another with WinXP to fix it and override the errors. WinXP is more reliable in networking including the Internet. WinMe is a problem with some programs and not so bad.

As on ripping/encoding, better to use Win98 or WinXP. The later OS, you have to set the OS on performance rather than the features. Win XP is more stable and have less chance of a crash or to freeze.

The key is your computer and its processor. The faster the better and a very big drive. Everyone should know this; P4 is the best processor in performance and speed.
