  1. Hi, I have a LG 49" SUPER UHD 4K SMART LED 49SJ800T TV , when i playback HDR Video files through USB port, the color is nothing special , is this normal?
I don't know what is the difference between HDR and SDR? I cannot see any difference.
The signal output by the TV is really a HDR color video, but color is just dull even in VIVID mode. Color is just the same as the normal bluray video/dvd video.

I don't have a 4k bluray player, must I purchase a 4k bluray player to notice the difference?

Thanks a lot for your reply.

  2. Found this answer on Google search: "For HDR to function the source system needs to support DisplayPort™ 1.4 standard. The HDMI™ output is fully compliant to HDMI™ specification version 2.0a. Supports up to 4K UHD Resolutions The USB 3.1 Type C to HDMI™ 2.0a HDR Active Adapter supports UHD resolu- tions up to 4096 x 2160p at 60Hz."

Don't know if that answers your question but it is a start.

Are you watching in a properly lit (i.e. near pitch black) room? The benefits of High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut (as well as Standard Dynamic Range) can't be fully seen if the room is too bright. HDR sets with correctly mastered HDR content are able to compensate for brighter rooms because their max brightness levels are higher than SDR, but since the black level (i.e. lowest end of the contrast range) is raised because of room lighting you won't see the blackest, blacks and whitest, whites HDR is capable of.

Watch the video with the lights on and off/minimized and during the day (assuming your room has natural daylight coming in) and during the night (lights on and lights off) and you'll see differences between even SDR content. Note that you have use different settings for your light and dark rooms and/or daytime and nightime with the dark room settings (brightness, contrast, etc.) set lower for the dark room. You'll probably have to tweak the settings yourself (possibly using the advanced menu settings if available) as the presets probably aren't enough to get the full quality your set is capable of.

I don't see anything specific for your set at avsforums.com, but ask about your set and someone there will help you with recommended settings for your light and dark rooms. And please say away from Vivid mode. This almost always is too bright and oversaturated (killing dynamic range) and is meant to compensate for overly bright showrooms.

Oh, and despite what you see in the showroom (with Vivid or Demo mode on), a properly tweaked (ideally professionally calibrated) set isn't supposed to 'pop', with the possible exception of anime or completely CGI content. It's supposed to look (contrast and color range) as close to what we see naturally. When you first tweak your set, the picture may seem a bit dark and dull compared to what you're used to, but give it a few hours and your eyes will adjust to it. Again, keep in mind that your set's picture isn't supposed to 'pop'.

I'm not sure if this correctly demonstrates how lighting affects your TV viewing, but when I was in flooring sales, we had a special lightbox with different color temp bulbs and would demonstrate how the carpet color would change (sometimes dramatically) with simulated morning, noon and dusk lighting. I spent a couple of hours in the home of a couple in the late afternoon to dusk because they wanted to see how the light changes looked on different carpet samples in their actual home enviroment.

  4. Thanks for all your reply, but must I get a 4K Bluray Player to watch the real 4K HDR video and what is so special about 4K bluray player? May I ask if I switch on the HDR mode on the bluray player to output the signal to my TV, any difference ? I usually watch my TV at night in my room, and sometime I switch off the light to watch
    but I notice nothing different.

Are you certain that the problem video files use either HDR-10 or Dolby Vision? Although other forms of HDR exist (HDR 10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma), your TV doesn't support them.
