  1. I've been using PotPlayer for a while now. The other day I was mucking about trying to set up LAV filters after going down a rabbit hole chasing auto audio track selection. I ended up borking things pretty badly, so I decided to just do a clean install. After installing the version downloaded from what I believe to be the official site, I'm getting worrisome behavior. Specifically, anytime I select certain embedded subtitle tracks I get a pop-up login screen for Kakao. I don't use KaTalk, nor do I have anything from Kakao installed (that I can find traces of anyway).

I've reinstalled and it still happens. It's weird though. It seems to only happen when selecting specific embedded subtitle tracks (Latin American Spanish) on specific files. These same files opened in KMPlayer do NOT trigger the popup when selecting the same subtitle track, however.

I've attached a video of the popup. I was advised on Reddit that this was an appropriate forum to post this in.

    Thanks

Just check the company that owns Potplayer.

That will explain the popup - I do not use this. I prefer vlc myself

Not sure what you mean by 'official site' since the player can be installed direct from this site.

I understand that they are owned by the same company. That does not explain the login prompt or why it only occurs when selecting a specific subtitle track. Also why it didn't occur ever with my previous installation.

By official site I meant Daum.potplayer.com.

    No idea.

But that is NOT the official site although it claims to only have official versions.

    The official site is potplayer.daum.net

    Connection is not secure.
The domain Potplayer.com may be for sale. Click here to inquire about this domain.
Anyway, I think that other version could be not adware, just it could be different, for Korean users.

Uninstall that version, remove all registry entries for potplayer, install the version form official site, or version from this site - standard or portable:

Just curious, but what previous installed version did you not see this prompt with?

I've given up finding ways to avoid the prompt, but since I have no interest in allowing PotPlayer to access online databases to download anything, I have been unable to find any setting that prevents this prompt.

In my case its probably also random on what embedded subtitle triggers the login prompt, but at least in my latest example it was only popping up when the subtitles cycled to the Korean subtitle, which I thought was hilarious, like a little Easter egg for Koreans, or whatever the heck, who cares, I don't like it and I don't want it happening.

Also note that this program, with all its features, does not play well in a firewall controlled environment. With my firewall settings, anytime I set my firewall to ask if this program needed access to the internet, the program would crash particularly when that login prompt appeared. The prompt is triggered by the program itself.

My firewall does not catch a request to connect to the internet when the kakao login prompt pops up, so the program is operating under the radar, aggressively in my opinion. So when my firewall is set to ask, the prompt PotPlayer pops up is not filled in with anything, remains blank. Closing the prompt window then freezes the program for a few minutes. During this time, the program is also very resilient to being closed through any means (taskkill or stop-process).

The way I've been admitting defeat so to speak is just give it internet access. But that does not stop the ocassional kakao login prompt. It interrupts my viewing experience having to close that prompt.

This has become more problematic now when I'm watching more recent content that now includes many embedded subtitles, such as Netflix, because this required me to add subtitle cycling, and that cycling is what eventually triggers the prompt.

In the past I've always been adding external subtitle files and don't recall ever seeing this prompt. Now with subtitles becoming ubiquitous, especially with streamed content, I'm spending less time looking for subtitles, content is now bundled with often multiple subs, it's all good, if only Potplayer behaved.

Unfortunately this is one of the few programs out there that does 2nd subtitles easily, since this is often something I need to do for some other family members. I will not easily change to another program due to this specific benefit. I have not seen other players do this well. VLC certainly does it in a cumbersome way.

So it's hard to hate the program, it does most things I need better than other programs.

So I'm willing to try an older version, thankfully VideoHelp lists links to seemingly all older versions. I just can't revert back earlier than when the 2nd subtitle support was added in version [1.6.49343]
