  1. My Dad has just bought the Sanyo 7201! DVD playback is fantastic
as is VCD, BUT according to the manual it says it doesn't support
SVCD even tho on here it states otherwise.
Does it have anything to do with the face this unit was bought in
the UK??? and if so, is there a way around it?

I think ill stick to my Bush 2004! Little sweetie plays anything!

I have a Sanyo 6040, and according to the manual AND an e-mail from their people, it too does not support SVCD's. However, I've made a half dozen of them so far with TMPGEnc and VCDEasy, and they play just fine...

Granted, with alot of testing, I've found they need to be made to certain specifications (mpeg-2 2-pass vbr, bitrate: 2200avg, 2520max, 2000min = about 45mins/cd). I wouldn't be suprised if your Sanyo 7201 also plays them. The only way you'll know for sure is to test it!

A couple notes if you decide to test:

    1) The samples from this site don't work (the audio skips).
    2) If you use TMPGEnc, encode the audio and video separately and mux them together using bbMPEG, not TMPGEnc.
    3) I've found it will play anything I throw in it, provided the min bitrate is as close to the avg bitrate as possible in 2pass vbr mode. If they are the same, it should play flawlessly, but the final filesize estimate is way off. 200 kbps apart is a good distance I've found.
    4) Though I have yet to verify this (why try to change something that works) don't burn the SVCD with NERO. Use VCDEasy to burn or create a bin/cue and use CDRWin.

  4. I am from the UK, well N. Ireland but lets not fight about it. I have the Sanyo 7201 DVD player. I have tried all media in it and works fine. I played my VCD's and SVCD's and DVDR and all works fine. I made my VCD's using TMPEGEnc nero 5.5. I also have made my player multi regional and macro free using an upgrade disk. This player is fantastic - any problems or queries just e-mail me.
