  1. Can we rip from a DVD played on a stand-alone player, through our AIW card & get a video file that we can watch/burn?
All the decrypting/decoding software we've been able to find want to work directly with the .vob files from a DVD, so what do we need - new capture software that decrypts as well?
We're using ATIs DigitalVCR for capture, but seems the protection-removal would have to be done before the capture process, eh?
...been looking here & related sites for hours, but nothing regarding the decryption process is helping with our setup...

  2. I actually had a post similar to this. I also use the ATI AIW to capture. I tried to capture video from my standalone DVD player, then from a tape created from the DVD, with the video looking fine as I captured, but the encoding was there when I tried to play it back. I suggest that you see if you can "hack" your DVD player before trying to capture with the AIW.

My solution was to use my built-in DVD player and rip the .vob's to my hard drive, and the encoding from the .vob's. Then, I played the .vob's back to my VCR, then recaptured the video from that.

  3. The best solution is to get an Apex 1500 (see http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/ ) and hack it. Then you can rip DVD's to VHS, VCD, SVCD, DIVX, etc..

  4. I think Stinky's MMC tool also has some files with a hack to turn off Macrovision detection in the ATI software. I haven't tried it, but if it works then you could capture from a DVD player or VCR and the AIW would just ignore the Macrovision signal.

This is the best (and IMO only reasonable) solution out there. Why screw around with analog capture and dropped frames and compromised quality when you can just use a DVD ripper and FlaskXMPEG to convert if you need to? If you don't have a DVD-ROM it's worth the $50 to get a decent one and go with it.

Agreed, you can find some cheap DVD-ROM drives out there, the picture quality that you get with a DVD-RIP with it would really out weigh the cost.

  7. All good answers, thaNX & all avenues we've been down the last day or so...
    & for us:
...if you can "hack" your DVD player before trying to capture with the AIW...
    worked
...get an Apex 1500...and hack it...
would you belive, that's just what we're dealing with & it worked like a charm.

note: For some reason Stinky's tool ain't working for us - all options read n/a

    nice community y'all got here

  8. Glad to see ya went the Apex way. For just around $19 over the computer DVD drive option mentioned above, you now got a standalone player and a whole bunch of options. The Apex to the AIW is what I use, no fuss, no muss. Now add a DVD recorder and ya got yourself the best setup available. Personally, I'm sticking to VHS tape backups though cuz the DVD burner is too expensive at the moment and I hate SVCD for anything more than slideshows or the occasional TV Show. It's just too time consuming for me.

Analog to digital captures can also be very acceptable if you use the right programs and settings. If you do it right, nobody can tell that it isn't from a ripped VOB.

P.s. TVtool doesn't work with any of the newer ATI cards.

  9. The weird thing about the AIW (Radeon), is that it came with MMC 7.1 & we downed 7.2 right away & never upgraded. Then we got into this, checked for the latest & found 7.6 - but that won't run for us for some reason...just shuts down when we start a capture session. Got the newest drivers for the card & for capture, but 7.6 just don't like our system. So it's 7.2 for us, we just got Stinky's MMC_Reg tool working, so all is C8)8)L

    thaNX, all
