Need a bit of help with SVCD bit of a newb here..

ok ive made VCD's before but recently found out my burner doesn't seem to like them and does a lot of skipping. I found that SVCD's work perfect but haven't tryed encoding a single avi that needs to be broken into two.. What exactly do I do with that bitrate calculator?? do I put when the minutes would be if I broke the movie down into two cd's?? and whats the deal with the don't go below 1500 because BHD worked when it was like 1160... blah bit of a newb here just looking for some help.. any help I get is greatly apretiated...
