  1. Greetings,

Is it possible to convert a VCD .DAT file to a AVI?

My reason for asking, I'd like to transfer to camcorder, via firewire, then from camcorder to video tape; viewing on television is much more pleasant than crowded about the monitor.

    Thank you.

  2. You do realise, of course, that you can play VCDs on your TV with most DVD players? That's the whole point of them.

To answer your question -- you can, but you will incur quality losses along the way. Firstly, just convert the DAT file on the VCD to an MPEG file on your PC with VCDGear. This takes no longer that copying the file.

As for converting to AVI, I'm not entire sure what you want to do... Depending on what software you have, can't you simply load the MPEG into whatever Firewire capture/editing proggy came with card and then export it to your camcorder?

    Regards.

    Thank you for your replay.

We do have a DVD; however, my hopes are to get it onto VHS tape to occupy the children in the back seat on a long trip, it may just be wishful thinking.

I know our video software offers many AVI and MPEG fomats, I may have assumed wrongly that AVI is the format used when transferring edited material back to camcorder and onto SVHS.

Best way to know is I'll give it a try.

    Thanks, again.

  4. If its just for the kids to watch, and quality is not a major concern. Pop the vcd into your dvd player, run its out to the vcr in and play it on the dvd player and record on vhs. Not High Quality, but faster than any other solution

Sometimes the "old-fashioned" ways are still best
