  1. Hi guys,

I was trying to backup "Dumbo" (the 70th Anniversary DVD that came in a combo pack with the BD), I tried the latest version of DVDFab Decrypter but it failed (read error). Just in case I then went to DVDDecrypter but it failed too.
Is there anybody who knows how to rip this disc?
    Thanks.

You might have a bad disc.

Try MakeMKV. It will rip the DVD to a main movie only MKV file, but it is free to use and if it works, you'll know that the disc is readable by a decryption/ripping program.

I generally use AnyDVD HD for all my decryption needs, but it is not free nor is it inexpensive for the lifetime version.

Ouch! This is the last thing I'd have wanted to hear!
I'll give it a try, thanks.

  4. Apparently, MakeMKV succeeded, now I have the movie and extra features on my HDD but as separate mkv files.
If it can be of any help I attach the log.
So, is this some kind of bitchy protection?

It does look like some type of structural sleight of hand going on. Hope you are happy with the two separate MKV files.

If not, you might have to use a commercial decrypter, like the full version of DVDFab, Passkey or AnyDVD.

  6. Actually there are 8 files (1 for the movie), it's better than nothing but I would be much happier with a normal DVD.
What I need to be sure of right now is that the disc is ok (i.e. not faulty).
If nothing else works I'll try to demux the mkv files and remux as VOBs so that I can have a DVD-Video. It's possible, isn't it?

If you want to make the MKV files into a DVD, this would be fairly simple using AVStoDVD. Each MKV file would be entered as a separate title, and you could make a menu to select each one.

Since MakeMKV doesn't re-encode anything, and AVStoDVD doesn't re-encode video or audio that is already compliant to DVD-video specifications, it would be a quick way of getting a DVD, with no loss of quality in the process. Just make sure you have output size set correctly if you don't want to re-encode anything. Default size is DVD-5, but most commercial DVD's are DVD-9.

Its not quite like decrypting and ripping the original DVD, since you will lose the original menu, but it should work ok.

The other decrypters mentioned, the full version of DVDFab, DVDFab Passkey and AnyDVD can probably give you a good rip of the original.

  8. I am a little torn, I'd like to see if I can rip it using those programs you mentioned, on the other hand I wouldn't want to clutter my computer installing several programs and not being able to rip it anyway.
I was thinking of using a more complex approach to go from mkv to DVD but AVStoDVD seems to be very interesting, I could give it a try.
In the meantime, thanks for your help

when you tried dvdfab, were you using the free HD Decrypter version or the paid version??
the free version of dvdfab may not work on many new release movies.

I've run across quite a few dvd's that dvdshrink gives error message, then rip to iso with slysoft, sometimes this is all it takes, ('shrink, open image) sometimes rip to folders ok sometimes folders then 'fixvts'. Sometimes brand new disk = bad disk. QC goin' down, lower & lower, , , manufacturers really do not care, , ,

Yes, no, maybe, I don't know, Can you repeat the question?

I like DVDFab PassKey better than AnyDVD - and there was a free version of Passkey available recently too.
