Hey!
I am in the middle of encoding lots of TV and movie titles, all from Blu-ray source. I am encoding the 1920x1080 TV source to 1280x720 resolution, and the movies the same way, except of course that they have a different height.
I am doing the encoding in HandBrake, and my question is: So far, I have the anamorphic option set to "None" and I manually input the correct resolution, with the "Keep Aspect Ratio" box checked just to be safe. I haven't experienced any playback issues of TV episodes, but now I am going to start encoding movies, which typically have black bars on top and bottom when viewed on TVs. I am going to crop away those black bars while encoding, leaving me with just the video frame. Will those encodes still be displayed correctly on a TV? Am I still "safe" using the "none" option in anamorphic, or should I change it?![]()

Most blu-ray players in the last 5 years will play mkv without the black borders as long as they are encoded properly, jut do a short encode and test it on a usb thumb drive.
The thing is if you get a tv in the future that's 21.9 then you will see unwanted borders.I think, therefore i am a hamster. -
In my experience, the television adds back the black bars to keep the aspect ratio.
As smrpix mentioned, it depends on the player but it wouldn't take long to make a short video for testing.
