  1. Hello. I'm sure you've all had this discussion way too many times with newbies like me. I tried to look at all the forum posts and follow their advice but so far nothing has worked.

I have an mkv file that I have remuxed after disabling the header stripping using mkvmergegui. Still wouldn't play. I then converted the mkv to mp4 using mkv2mp4. Still won't play. The only thing I can think at this point is that it is the audio codec? The strange thing is it shows the same codec as another mkv file that will play on my tv.

Sorry to beat this dead horse but I am feeling out of my depth. Any help is greatly appreciated. Here is what the file shows and the model of my tv.

    TV: Samsung 78" 4K Class SUHD UN78JS8600FXZA

    Video:
    Codec : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC
    Properties: 1920x1080 pixels

    Audio:
    Codec: A_AC3
    Properties: 48000 hz, 6 channels

Like I said I can play other MKV files with the same codecs and properties/pixel size so I am feeling pretty stumped.

You needed to compare the media info of two files
One that play's, one that Won't
    Use the list/text mode
    Not the short mode
    There is a difference
Bit rate, number of ref frames, frame rate..?

  5. Most players are limited to AVC High Profile Level 4.1 with a maximum DPB size ("ReFrames") for 4 frames at 1920x1080 pixels, Level 5.1 with DPB of 16 is too much. If this is the case for your player you have to completely re-encode the file, simply remuxing into a different container is not sufficient.

Btw, I see the non-working file is muxed with an extremely old version of mkvmerge. I'd at least try out the newest one (8.7.0), just to be sure this is really the problem (header stripping is off by default in the newer versions, don't worry about it). Your TV's manual is ambiguous on the matter of DPB size. Since it supports UHD H.264 I cannot say for certain whether 16 at 1080p is actually allowed or not.

  6. Thanks for reply sneaky. I tried remuxing with most current version of mkvtoolkit first. That's the source file I screenshotted not the output. No dice.

how would I go about re encoding the file how you suggested?

  7. There are many different ways to do it, I'm gonna give one example:
    1. Download and install HandBrake
    2. Open your source file with HandBrake
    3. Set "Container" to "MKV" (below "Output Settings")
    4. Set the Video tab like e.g.:

(Change "x264 Preset" if you want faster/slower conversion, change "RF" for higher/lower quality/filesize)

    5. Select audio and subtitles you want to keep in the respective tabs, e.g.:
    Image
[Attachment 35058 - Click to enlarge]

(Selecting "Auto Passthru" as audio codec will keep audio quality instead of re-encoding)

    6. Select output directory and click "Start" to start the conversion process
