I have an MP4 that has 2 audio streams in it and no subtitles. It is 2.43GB. I then tried to use the newest version of Handbrake to simply add my external subtitles ("burn in") like I have done many times. But when it was done, the 2.43GB file had become over 3.4GB. There are exactly 30 lines of small text. Nothing to warrant an almost 1GB rise in size, especially when I losing that extra audio track.
So that's why I'm using Handbrake 0.95 (I can't believe they removed the "Target Size" feature from new updates, what is wrong with them?). I do the same thing I did in the new version of Handbrake, but "Forced" and "Burn In" are both grayed out. All that is left is "Default" but I want to burn the subtitles onto the video. I also tried to use Yamb to add the subtitles to the MP4 itself. Of course, it made absolutely no difference at all...
Basically, all I care about is burning in the subtitles and controlling the video size. So if you guys know of a way to limit size in the new Handbrake or know a better way to do it, let me know. But if possible, I would like to keep using Handbrake because it's usually a pretty great program.
I'm really out of ideas, do you guys know why the "Burn In" option is grayed out? The same MP4, the same Sub file in the new Handbrake has "Burn In" not grayed out. Any help would be much appreciated.

Before version 0.10 you can't hardcode .srt. You can hardcode .ass but they need to be muxed in the source file. For vers 0.10 use avg bitrate to control resulting filesize
filesize = playtime * bitrate -
Thanks, I didn't know that. I have used Aegisub before, so I will try to convert it to .ass right now. But will Yamb be able to mux MP4 and the .ass sub file? If not, is there another option to get to mux the MP4 and .ass?
And how can you control resulting filesize with avg bitrate? Is it the same, using MB the same way?
EDIT: Just saw this "filesize = playtime * bitrate" -- But how can I know my bitrate without first encoding it? Like how much the audio is + video? Or is that where I just say X is the max bitrate I want?
Cool. I will check it out thanks. -
I just tried this program out...
Thank you so much, it worked perfectly! It limited size, hardcoded the subtitles (.srt), and everything else.
I'm very disappointed with Handbrake honestly. The old version doesn't burn in subs, the new version doesn't limit size (directly with MB)...
So is there a way to mux MP4 and .ass sub files together? I can't do it in Yamb and cannot do it in My MP4 Box, but that's all I've tried so far. I think I have muxed MKV and .ass and .ssa together before in MKVMerge, so I guess if I really wanted (in the future) I could convert MP4 to MKV, but considering I would just make it MP4 again I don't know if that makes a lot of sense.
If there is a way to mux the MP4 and .ass let me know. I would like to see if Handbrake would do it then. -
Use MKVMergeGUI (/MKVToolnix) to mux .ass and MP4. You'll get a MKV that is converted to MP4 in HandBrake.
But how can I know my bitrate without first encoding it
