  1. Hello everyone!

I've been reading and learning a lot from the all of you, but I now really find the need to post a new thread.

Searching usually is enough but I decided to open a new thread as I can't find an answer. Probably is because English is not my first language

    OK here it goes:

I want to rip 2 DVDs so I can store them on a portable USB drive and play it on my TV. For BluRays I use MakeMKV and it works perfectly. For DVDs it also does a great job but the problem is my TV internal player. What I am guessing from searching the forum since Friday is that it has something to do with square pixels.

With VidCoder the result was better but the image on the TV still appeared thin and tall. I set Cropping Automatic and Anamorphic Loose. Here are 2 screens of the riping results.

    with MakeMKV:

    VidCoder:

On the PC the VidCoder file had the perfect aspect ratio, just like the DVD, but my TV won't display it properly.

My guess now is to reduce the height in VidCoder. But can't figure it out. This is the DVD ifo:

    Should I post more info?

    Thanks in advance

Can you post the details from the mkv you made with vidcoder? Use mediainfo, view->text and copy the everything.

I think your tv has problem with the display and pixel aspect ratio in the mkv.

Everything looks good. Maybe try make a mp4.

  6. The resolution of the encoded video is different to the aspect ratio so it's probably an issue with the player not respecting the aspect ratio in MKVs, in which case you'd need to resize to square pixels.

Instead of "anamorphic loose" for Vidcoder, use "anamorphic none" and that should fix it.
The alternative would be to keep ripping with MakeMKV and get the TV to correct the aspect ratio. Chances are it has an option for stretching the video to fill the screen which in the case of 16:9 DVD video, would get it to display with the correct aspect ratio. The downside is you'd need to change the TVs picture setting manually as required.

It's odd MPC-HC doesn't appear to be displaying the MakeMKV rip correctly in your screenshot. It should. Or did you change the way it displays to show how it looks on the TV?

  7. Baldrick, mp4 gave the same result.

hello_hello , I'm going to try "anamorphic none" in Vidcoder. I have no option to change the aspect ratio on my TV when playing from USB. I didn't change anything on MPC, that how it displays the mkv from MakeMKV. If I disable "Keep aspect ratio" it displays it properly though...

I finally got it using MeGUI!!! I achieved it by adding the --sar 40:33 custom command line. It was complicated, but I got it.

As I said on my first post, I have 2 DVDs I want to rip. The second one didn't work with MeGUI. Don't know why as both are NTSC 16:9...

Thanks so much for the help, I will try now "anamorphic none" in VidCoder.

  8. You shouldn't need to set the DAR in MeGUI's encoder configuration if you open the video with the file indexer, index it and create a script for encoding using the script creator. The script creator has an anamorphic encoding option and when enabled MeGUI will work out the required SAR after cropping and add it to the command line for you. If you don't enable anamorphic encoding the resize function will resize to square pixels (as does anamorphic none for Vidcoder).

Did the MeGUI encode display correctly using the TV's media player?

I don't use MakeMKV but in theory MPC-HC should display the ripped DVD video correctly. Maybe check to make sure "override aspect ratio" is set to default. From memory "Keep aspect ratio" needs to be checked for the over-ride aspect ratio function to work. Although thinking about it, the "Keep aspect ratio" option might effect which aspect ratio MPC-HC obeys. It's usually written to the video stream and stored in the container (MKV or MP4 etc). I think by default MPC-HC obeys the container aspect ratio first, but I'd have to test it myself to remember how it works and the container and video stream aspect ratios should be the same anyway.

  9. Anamorphic none is the answer!!!

The MeGUI encode displayed correctly, yes, but VidCoder is much easier to use for me and I'll stick with it.

thank you hello_hello for explaining it!
