I have digitized (captured) a large number of MiniDV (DV ) PAL tapes and even if I have not yet finished the job ( I still have about 100 h to capture ) I am interested to begin testing the best solutions for my final outputs and hear from the members of this forum the best solutions to choose from, before and in order to take my final decisions. My objective is doing a version for Pc presentation and a DVD (eventually in some cases Blu-ray)

Pc presentation version – with limited restore /enhancement

The miniDV tape captures in DV codec are reasonably good and need only very limited enhancement. I assume that for PC presentation I will have to desinterlace . I have tried smart desinterlace with virtualdub . Is this the best or more suitable filter /plug-in for this purpose ? For denoise namely in poor light conditions I thought of camcorder color denoise or Konstantin Khlopenkov’s Spot Remove that includes a noise reducer, I also have neat video but I think is to extreme only perhaps in special situations. I´m trying VirtualDub with several filters as a base, but I’m also trying VideoCleaner ( avsPmod, Avisynth, virtualdub) and an already discontinued soft. VReveal.

For VirtualDub Is there any filter order that I must be aware to get the best results?

Is there any possibility to do enhancement ( color correction, denoising and desinterlacing) without reencoding , leaving the file with it´s original DV format?

As I start from a lossy codec ( DV PAL ) 4.2.0 what will be the best process to limit losses due to reencoding to fulfill the eventual needed enhancements.

I was thinking of mp4 as a final format for pc presentation or eventually Xvid, are these the best choices or should I choose a different one

    DVD / Blu-Ray Authoring

I have found a lot of references to several packages in this forum , however I think some of them are not available any more ( Womble MPEG video wizard, Videoredo, smart renderer, procoder 2, Ulead DVD workshop, TMPGenc dvd authoring works and many more ).

Can only one package as for instance Sony Movie Studio 13 or TMPGEnc video mastering works 5/6 or any other provide good and solid results or is it preferable separate products for encoding and DVD authoring.

    I Have a legacy XP PC (P4 , 3,4MHZ,Ati Radeon x300/256, 4 GB ram, 1+2 TB SSHD 7200 disks) and a Windows 7 PC (QuadCore Intel i7-3800 mhz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560/ 1GB, 16GB Ram, 2+ 4 TB 7200 disks)

My Preference is to have a very good quality encoder software, ( for now I will only be doing DVD but I think I can also do Blu-Ray after), and a standard and easier to use DVD authoring as I only have in mind some edit and limited menus ( however not to limited as my needs may change over time )

I´m going to do some tests with TMPGenc plus and Sony movie studio 13 but I have to decide if it´s preferable to use 2 distinct products one for encoding and other for authoring or if only one could give me solid results and what will be the best in class .

I know that sometimes there are personal preferences related to the several choices I have to do but even so I was interested to hear what are now considered the best , proven and feasible solutions.

Thanks in advance for your advices

  2. You can play DV directly from a comuter as-is. Let your monitor or player handle any interlacing issues. If you assemble your video with straight cuts you can do a completely lossless DV->DV output. Any modifications, color tweaks, etc will require a reencode.

TMPGEnc authoring works and Sony DVD Architect will allow you to make a single project and output as either Blu Ray or DVD.

    thanks you for your advices

I would also be interested to know what are considered the best filters for cleaning , denoizing , desinterlacing and for chroma problems namely bleeding and under what conditions they should be used . I would be grateful if anyone could share is experience.
