  1. So I got a JVC HR-S9600U and want to get the
highest quality playback from it for capturing to AVI.

what are things to remember when tuning this VCR?

I got the VCR but I don't know how to use it properly.
And to make things worse, the controller came broken

    any help would help.

    I have an HR-S9911U. I prefer
    Video Calibration ON
Makes auto-tracking a bit smarter, though sometimes you have to do manual track adjustments anyway.

    Picture Control EDIT
Provides the least-processed picture; I prefer to do adjustment in the digital domain. Some advocate AUTO.

    Digital R3 OFF
This is edge enhancement. Again, I prefer to do after conversion.

    Video Stabilizer OFF
I use an external frame synchronizer to handle jitter.

    Digital TBC/NR ON
Cleans up the picture quite a bit; I only turn off with a marginal tape that looks better without it.
