Long story short, make sure to back up the data and files you absolutely can't afford to lose to an external hard drive that you don't keep running all the time and that you keep in a safe place.

Eventually all HDD fail !

ALL storage systems fail. SSD, BD, DVD, HDD, etc. They all can fail. How long before failure is important, but even the best system can fail in two seconds, or two years or longer. There is an important random factor to take into account.
To protect your data you back up what's important to different storage systems, and store in different locations. It all depends on how important the data is to you for how far you want to go to preserve it.
Just my opinion, but I've lost more than a dozen HDDs over the last ten years, and two SSDs, and quite a few CDs and DVDs that were made on cheap media. When I went to good DVD media, Tayio Yuden, no loses so far. Then with BD SL and DL media, Verbatim. Again, no losses. At least not yet....
