*Media problem?(although I highly doubt it Im using verbatim dvd-r azo's that I got on cyber monday)

*A software problem? (Im still using antiquated Nero 7 lol, but has rarely ever had issues burning single layer dvds)

*Could it be the Burner? (The burner is 5 years old but I never used it really AT ALL until about a year ago where it has gotten regular use.)

Its not my dvd player... Ive tried dvds that I burned prior to getting this new spindle of verbatims and they played without a hitch.

This is not a huge issue atm however, I have burned 6 single layer discs so far and around the 2 min mark up until the 10 min mark it just freezes for 1-2 secs then everything else plays normally, but Id like to know what is causing this. And one disc just kept hanging from around the 2-4 min mark.... (but at least right now 5 out of 6 are watchable for sure

Anyway the hardware im using is...

*HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GU10N MT10 (burner) (dunno the brand older toshiba laptop) (the stock firmware.... have no idea how to update, have looked on google and cant find really)

    *Phillips 5990 (standalone dvd player)

*Nero 7 (software) and Im only burning backup retail copies of discs...(no converting of avis mkvs etc to dvd) Im burning using an ISO and also the Video TS folder.

I might be able to figure all this out this weekend on my own but would save me a lot of time, as it takes long enough backing up discs then burning them on my off days. Again though just a minor issue probably being OCD a bit LOL

Thanks to anyone who can help... appreciate it

    I would guess media problem.

Do you notice any freezes if you play the burned dvd on your computer with a software dvd player?

You know that was my first guess but it being Verbatim Azo from a reliable place I been buying from close to a year now Its hard for me to blame the media.... but Ive read on here there are bad batches... It is strange the burn is successful, and the movie plays fine it just hangs for a couple a secs once or twice within the first 10 min.

And the burnt disc does the same for me on my pc with MPC-HC.... I really dont have the time to burn discs and test them during the week but I also have some AZO DL discs that Ill test this weekend which have worked fine thus far... used about 10 of them so far out of 50 spindle (Burning with Alcohol though). Im wondering if discs arent bad but maybe slightly different in how they were made, new version of disc causing some issue with nero or burner. Cause when people get a bad batch typically thats when the burns completely fail I thought.

Every manufacturer of blank media can have the occasional slip-up where some poor discs make it out on the market. Your situation is a little different in that Verbatim doesn't do this all that often, and most poor discs have issues when burning near the edge, not near the start of the burn (close to the center). Can you see any obvious flaws in the discs themselves?

You're sure these are AZO discs? Verbatim does sell "Life Series" discs that do not use the Mitsubishi AZO dye.

Sounds like an LG drive from the name. For a laptop drive, you'd need to check on the laptop manufacturer's site for a possible firmware update. Search using the laptop model number. Many laptop drives use proprietary firmware.

I'm not a big fan of Nero, but it should be able to burn a DVD. You could try burning with ImgBurn and verifying the burn immediately after.

100 percent sure they are AZO discs. Cant see any obvious flaws in them either. I also was thinking maybe it was just a handful of discs near the top of the spindle that were a little messed up. I do remember the Internet(Wi-Fi) on the laptop kept disconnecting too last weekend when burning these discs.... But I dont think that would make any difference.

Perhaps ImgBurn would do a slightly better job and with a more accurate burn to this disc that will fix the brief moments that hang in the movie.

  6. While ripping, try not to be connected to the internet & while burning try to let the machine do his job ...No Multitasking help too.

If you suspect Nero is the problem: Uninstall & re-install it again.

Im always disconnected to the internet when ripping. When Burning I do Connect to the Internet but there is nothing running other than Nero and a few other essential processes. I always burn at 8x. Maybe slowing down the burning speed might help with these discs. As I said at most 1-2 seconds are hanging out of the entire movie so no biggie. I dont think its an issue with Nero but Ill try some newer software and see if there's any difference, first imgburn, then I also can try Alcohol which I normally just burn Dvd9s with but its worth a try....

  8. 4x will be better.

...a simple old fashion DVD-Decrypter could replace Nero, ImgBurn, etc. on the fly.

Well hey thanks to Valbrec, Kerry, and also Baldrick for the input. I bought some new dvd5s locally which have always worked in the past for me to test. (Didnt feel like waiting for order of more verbatims to arrive thru mail, this time of year) Feel like it actually was the verbatim discs or at least the first maybe 5-10 off the spindle that might have some "bad spots" not playing well. If these new dvd5s do the same thing then its the burner or something else.

Anyway, I'll give 4x a try, though I been burning at 8x for over 5 years without any issues. The slower speed could be more accurate so couldnt hurt to try. I use AnyDvd with Imgburn for ripping and it does a great job most of the time. The drive I use to rip discs(a newer external one I bought, just a dvd-rom drive)doesnt work with dvddecrypter unfortunately.

Did you verify the burn or test the disc afterwards?

You can test with software like Nero Disc Speed: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/nero_discspeed.html
