  1. I've been having trouble with the audio on a .ts video file. In VLC I get static audio (like an old TV). In WMP and other players no audio track is detected.

I'm not a total noob when it comes to codecs, and I'm pretty certain I have an up-to-date set (no trouble playing anything else).

This is information copied from MediaInfo:

    Audio
    ID : 256 (0x100)
    Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
    Format : Dolby E
    Mode : 20
    Format settings, Endianness : Little
    Muxing mode : AES3
    Codec ID : 131
    Duration : 2h 17mn
    Bit rate mode : Constant
    Bit rate : 1 920 Kbps
    Encoded bit rate : 2 304 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 6 channels
    Channel positions : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
    Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
    Bit depth : 20 bits
Delay relative to video : -500ms
    Stream size : 1.84 GiB (11%)

Elsewhere the codec is identified as s302m.

My best guess is the that the problem lies with Dolby E. I downloaded a trial of Neyrinck's decoder software, but it always crashes whenever I try to load the .ts or a .wav I stripped using VLC (it doesn't help that their software looks to have been created in 1995).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Codec issue. I don't know of any codecs that support the HD formats used on Blu-Ray (but I don't keep up with the audio codecs). The preferred playback method is to bitstream to an AVR which supports it.
