  1. When I try to save as AVI the file sizes are really big. How do I make the file sizes smaller? Also, how can I save it as an MP4 file?

By default, VirtualDub is set to output uncompressed AVIs. These, as you've discovered, are huge. To avoid this, look under the Video dropdown menu. Make sure that "Full processing mode" is selected, and then choose "Compression". There you'll find a choice of codecs available on your computer, enabling you to compress your videos down to an acceptable file size. You can do the same under the Audio menu, too, unless you want uncompressed sound as well.

An exception: if all you're doing is making basic cuts to a video file (trimming the start and end, getting rid of adverts, etc.), set both Video and Audio to "Direct stream copy". The final AVI will then suffer no quality loss at all, and the size will be a little smaller than the original.

I'll add one caveat to Mr. Chris' second suggestion: When you use Direct Stream Copy, your edits will begin and end at the previous keyframe, regardless of where you put the start and end markers.

  4. You can export MP4 with the vdub "external encoder" feature. There are guides on the vdub forum website

  5. I edited a video and uploaded it inside WordPress and got this message html5: Video not properly encoded. I saved it as an MP4 file using x264vfw and xvid codec. Even with both of them I got the same message. Do you know how I can encode the file in a way that will work in WordPress?

I use WordPress as a CMS for a site. I use web hosting and not the free service. I use FV Wordpress Flowplayer as the player.
