I can't seem to figure out how to capture 5.1 audio via HDMI with my tv box. It's a explorer 8300hdc and there doesn't seem to be any audio settings for the box.

I can't figure out how to make it record 5.1 audio. I've looked at every setting on the set top and there doesn't seem to be any option to allow 5.1 audio and no matter what i do in Hauppauge Capture it won't capture 5.1 only 2.0

I'm lost as i don't know what else to do.

This is the only audio setting my box has

and this under "Device" but if i switch it to "Other" or "Dolby Digital" there is no sound at all.

I'm paying 15$/m for this set top box just to record TV with it onto my PC. I don't have it hooked up to a TV or anything, only my hdpvr2, would that cause it not to broadcast 5.1 audio?

With my Comcast box, the HDMI audio settings are accessed via a hidden setup menu.

I don't know if this procedure will work for you, but I have to turn on the box and the TV, then shut off the box and quickly press and hold the "Menu" button on the remote until the menu appears. I think the audio settings are under "HDMI". When finished, I turn off the box and turn it on again.

I've done quite a bit of googling and don't see any kind of special menu for my cable box. There is a Diagnostic Screen and that is about it from what i see.

I looked at an online user manual for the Explorer 8300HD at TWC's website. It says the following:

Important Note Regarding the HDMI Interface
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an all-digital audio and video
interface. HDMI provides a digital interface between any audio and video source.
HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus digital audio.
Some HDTVs do not contain circuitry to decode Dolby® Digital formatted
content. If you connect your DVR to an HDTV that cannot support Dolby Digital
audio, the HDMI interface instructs the DVR to switch its audio outputs to
2-channel PCM audio (to be compatible with the HDTV). In this case, all digital
audio outputs on the DVR are formatted as 2-channel PCM. As a result, you will
not be able to receive Dolby Digital or DTS audio on your home theater system
when connected to either the optical or coax (RCA Connector) S/PDIF ports.
You can avoid this by overriding the automatic configuration through the General
Settings menu and switching the audio output to Dolby Digital.
According to the manual, the "General Settings" menu appears if the "Settings" button is pressed twice. There is likely a setting called "Audio Output" on that screen.

Pressing "Settings" twice does nothing. It just closes the normal "Settings" tab

The instruction to press the "Settings" button on the remote twice to access the "General Settings" screen appears more than once in the downloadable user guide. I don't know what to else to suggest, other than to press "Settings" button down once, but hold it a little longer. I don't have your box or TWC service so I can't try this myself.

Yeah, i tried it every way possible. It just closes the normal settings window.

This picture that i posted before is the the only that comes close to an audio setting on this box that i have found.

Switching it from "HDMI" to "Dolby Digital" makes it have no sound at all via Hauppauge Capture.

It's also pretty weird that now WinTV won't work now that i have an HDMI cable. It just keeps saying "No Signal" yet Hauppauge Capture and NextPVR both get a signal. I do prefer WinTV over NextPVR though.
