Any advice on correcting this error with my TBC? It is the SA-T22U in a BR-S822DXU.
Do I need to adjust the video phase? I know this is a TBC error, as with the TBC disabled this doesn't occur.
Bit of a back story, I bought one of these units online and the front panel got smashed. It appears to mostly work, but the jog wheel is busted so I can't change any menu settings. Nor can I work out how to remove the jog wheel to repair it, the service manual indicates there is a screw to remove under the rubber ring, but I can't see any. A word of advice, steer clear of the eBay global shipping programme.

PAL vs. NTSC?
Why is your capture NTSC (720x480, 29.97 fps)? UK is PAL (720x576, 25 fps).Last edited by jagabo; 5th Oct 2014 at 08:31.

NTSC tape in an NTSC deck. Capture card is set up to record NTSC.
Playback without the TBC is intermittent, as would be expected, but it doesn't roll. -

Was your capture software set to NTSC during it's initial install?

Capture software captures other NTSC sources fine, so the issue isn't in the capture software.

Maybe 60 hz (bw TV) vs 59.94 hz (color TV)? The drift from line to line seems to be about that much.

My guess is that the TBC either needs adjustments/calibration, or that as part of the damage to the front of the unit it is stuck genlocking to the wrong source.

Good idea, but I doubt this is the issue because the video rolls leftwards horizontally. An issue with the vertical sync would affect the video vertically. Because the video is rolling horizontally this indicates there is an issue with the horizontal sync pulse at the beginning of every line.
The TBC appears to be reconstructing the h-sync incorrectly. I don't have any of my reference books on video theory, but perhaps this is something do with a phase adjustment? I do not recall what effect modifying phase has on video signals.Last edited by magikarp99; 5th Oct 2014 at 14:17.
