Another Newbie here!! My DV444 will only play SVCD's of 2500 bitrate so on that note... when encoding I set the bitrate to 2500. I've tryed several tests playing with (TMPGEnc... sorry) the full screen, center (keep asp. rat.) things like that ... but just on like 3000 frames that way i dont have to wait for full rip and not get what i want. anyways..... how does that effect my final rip? T.I.A. P.S. what is the long term effect on my CPU... LOTS in LOTS of crunchin going on :o

  2. Encoding a few thousand frames is fine and smart for testing the limits of your dvd player.

As long as your encoding computer is not a laptop, keep on truckin ... I mean encoding. Laptops have poor heat disipation and are expensive to replace the processor. Desktops processors are cheaply/easily replaced and I have never had a CPU burn up from constant use. Hard drives are another matter ... they will eventually die.

  5. I have a Pioneer 440 which is almost identical to a 444 (except it's black and has no pseudo-progressive output).

With my player, I have found that 2500 is the highest limit to use without occassional video glitches and blips. To be on the safe side, I've started using 2450 (audio bitrate 224) as the max to avoid stutters and wierd random artifacts.

Make 1 minute movies and see if there are any wierd video glitches at 2520, 2500, and 2450. If there are none, you can use that bitrate. However, include the audio to make sure that your player can handle the video+audio total bitrate. Once you have found the perfect maximum settings, save it as a template, write it down, or commit it to memory.
