    I have have an old 2GB Maxtor (PIO 4, according to boot screen...) slaved to a 20GB Fujitsu ata100. I have read articles about the Master device only running as fast as the slave.. is the Maxtor slowing me down?.....

    It's usually not a good idea to slave things off the HD ur OS is on....does slow things down.

    Yes, when you mix different speed drives on an IDE bus, the entire bus speed slows down to the slowest speed. In your case PIO Mode 4.
