  1. I have two avi files, each with a subtitle file, and would like to combine all four files into one. Is there a tool and/or technique for doing this?

You must join the subtitles with a subtitle editor first like subtitle edit.

And then you have several options:

Into one avi file with switchable subtitles? Maybe avimuxgui. But the subtitles might not work with all players.

Into one avi file with hardcoded subtitles? You must reconvert and use for example Avidemux, freemake video converter.

Into one mkv file with switchable subtitles ? Then use mkvtoolnix / mkvmergegui, add the avi and append the other avi file. Add the joined srt file. Make a new mkv file.

  3. Baldrick knew it already and covered nicely SSA (subtitles) just-in-time while I was bold facing somewhere else. Smart GuY!

If you do so, probably you have to shift timecode for 2nd subtitle from 2nd AVI file by total running time of 1st avi + minor adjustment from 2nd.

  4. Thanks to you both for the quick and helpful replies. However, isn't subtitle edit a Windows only program? I have Jubler - would that work?

Also, would it be possible to first hardcode the subtitles and then do the conversion?

    Just dual boot into windows...

When you hardcode you are converting the video.
