MP2 to MP4 enhancements

Hi everyone,
recorded some video on a Canon XL1 at 16;9 downloaded it onto a PC via MACIX Video Rescue and it wasn't 16;9 and in MP2 format. Then used "Any MP4 MkV Converter" software for the Mac to transfer it to MP4 and 16;9 Quality is shocking, and people don't look quite right. Original isn't great but I need to
1)sort right aspect ratio
2) some sort of software to sharpen

Colour balance etc is fine

HELP PLEASE!!!!!! I am really new to this and struggling

Try handbrake.
