TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian athlete has been stripped of his bronze medal and ordered home for baring his buttocks after crossing the finishing line in competition.
Daniel Blouin, an amateur athlete from Quebec, told Reuters on Friday that he was so excited at his unexpected placing in Wednesday's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2001 Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario, that he turned to several team mates and briefly "mooned" them.
"With the emotion -- and my team mates were asking me to do it -- I didn't think about it a lot," said Blouin, who had been ranked 10th in the event. "I've done that a few times to make my friends laugh."
Unfortunately for Blouin organizers of the Games weren't laughing. They disqualified him.
And officials from the Quebec team, not wanting him to become a distraction to the rest of their athletes, ordered him home on Thursday.
Quebec's assistant chef de mission, Louis McNulty said the team attempted to get Blouin's standing reinstated, but after the appeal failed the decision was out of their hands.
"We deal with the code of conduct," McNulty added. "We were the ones that, after talking with him, the team captain, the coach and the manager, who decided to send him back home."
Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, Ontario, who initially came in fourth but was then awarded the bronze after Blouin's disqualification, has said he will mail the medal to Blouin.
"Reid Coolsaet knows that I won legally -- I'm not taking drugs or anything like that. It was a joke, and (game organizers) didn't accept it," he said.
