  1. I came to know that the only default codec installed in windows 7 OS is microsoft video 1 codec. I want to share a video, i dont want the person on the other side to install any codec or any new player (It should be playable in WMP). I personally like xvid codec due to its high compression ratio. If anyway possible for me to use xvid codec for my above requirement or i should stick with microsoft video 1 codec?

  5. Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate, and Windows 8 Home Premium and Pro include an MPEG 4 Part 2 (Xvid/Divx) decoder. I don't know about Home Starter, Home Basic and other versions. No flavor of XP included and MPEG 4 Part 2 decoder (keep in mind that a large number of computers around the world are still running XP). I don't know about Vista.

Microsoft Video 1 is a 20 year old codec and shouldn't be considered for anything.

  6. wmv3 would be a better choice than microsoft video 1 on windows. It has similar compression efficiency to xvid , and can be played out of the box even on xp in WMP
