Blockbuster has admitted defeat in the DVD-rental business.
Parent company Dish announced Wednesday that it will shut down all of the remaining US-owned Blockbuster stores by early January 2014. The closure will affect around 300 remaining retail outlets as well as the company's distribution centers.
The Blockbuster By Mail service will be cut off in mid-December. Only franchised and licensed stores in the US and abroad will keep their doors open.

I remember BB was a lot like the cable co., take it or leave it, stand in line, late fees, insufficient stock, rude sales clerks, not enough parking, high rental fees.

well, not from me at least. about seven years ago i had 3 movies, for 3 months and they wanted $98 dollars or i couldn't rent from them anymore. i never rented from them anymore. oh wait... that was hollywood video. well, same thing.

plus, you can get dvd movies for like $1.99 in these huge buckets, walmart, and kmart. i bet they do a bfriday for 0.99 cent or something.

I had a big fight with them over two games that my son rented; I returned them in their drop box and they never got scanned in to the system. I refused to pay, finally called their main HQ in Texas and wrangled it out. A month later our local newspaper posted that two employees were caught stealing returned games and fired. They had a manager that was going to be open-minded and hired some ghetto kids to work the counter. They were mouthy, rude and negligent.

You forgot about the 100 page application and 6 forms of ID.

  10. It is a mixed history for Blockbuster. I know smaller stores used to cuss at the mention of Blockbuster, but Blockbuster hung around for a very long time. In a way, I am kind of saddened to see them go.
