I have been using 32 GB Flash Drives to store and play my VOB Videos to my TV, but I want something with 1 TB storage that will do the same thing. Can somebody recommend a unit to do this?
i tried a Seagate 2 TB External Hard Drive, but when I load my videos on it, only a few of them show up.

Support is difficult where details lack information about playback device.

    Tv make and model ?

For usb input only use external hard drives which come with their own power supplies ... as for why some videos don't show it may come down to two likely issues.

A: drives capacity supported by "tv" exceeds max limit
B: Most likely cause is video's in unsupported format ... convert to supported format.

What I have now is a Phillips DVD player with a USB input that supports VOB files. It is too file sensitive, plays some VOB files, but not others….Poorly supported.
What I would really like is a device I can load MP4 files on and play them directly into the HDMI input on my TV. Surely there has to be something out there. This way I wouldn't have to convert the MP4 files to VOB.

You need to so some SERIOUS reading.....starting with the manual for your Philips DVD player.

Negative on the reading. I read everything on it, and it doesn't do what it says. It's not rocket science to understand, and what I'm asking isn't beyond our realm of expectations. I want an MP4 storage and player to play into a HDMI port.

A number of media players such as the WD TV Live or ASUS O!Play mini offer the support you want. They won't play every possible type of video that can be found in an MP4 file, but will play most. They can use external USB 2.0 hard drives that have their own power supply.

Thank you so very much for a straight forward answer.
After looking at this device, it looks like just another streamer. I want a device that you can STORE AND PLAY the MP4 files to your TV through the HDMI port.

I have been searching quite a bit for a device that will store and play at least a few file types, preferably MP4, because that is the format most downloaders utilize. All the converters I have tried are painstakingly slow. So the WD TV will store and play the MP4 Files? I'll look at it. I have seen some players that play most files, but you have to input the files from another device such as flash drive. Flash drive doesn't store enough for my needs. If the WD TV stores 1 TB, that would be awesome.
They do not come with built-in storage. You need to attach an external hard drive with its own power supply to get 1-2 TB of storage. 3TB drives will probably not work unless partitioned to 2TB and smaller. Some media players can also access media on NAS/networked drives.

I don't think you are going to find a player with 1TB of storage built-in. You will need to buy a hard drive to add storage.

  10. The WDTV Live Hub can be bought with a 1 TB drive built in. There are other media players with built in storage too. And players were you can plug in your own internal drive. And almost all standalone media players will let you play videos on an external USB drive.

Now we're talking. That's what I'm looking for. One unit that I can store the MP4 files on and play the to my HDMI port. I'm going to check that out. The Seagate External Hard Drive I bought is user unfriendly as far as formatting and playing video files.

The problem with trying to play video files from an external hard drive to my DVD USB Input is that the DVD is lame for what video formats it supports. It's so unfriendly that it supports some VOB files but not others. That's why I want to eliminate the DVD player from my system and play directly from the storage / player device.

So you don't need to read about "MP4" being a container that can contain a varietly of different video and audio codecs....any one of which can be incompatible with your Philips?

You may go out and buy a WD player and be in the exact same boat you are right now.....trying to play MP4 files with odd or unsupported video or audio codecs.

It all depends on the original source file and the competency of the converting program now doesn't it?

That way I could use MPEG files directly from YouTube and wouldn't have to convert them to .VOB Decisions Decisions Decisions

That is affirmative. My goal is to have a storage and player for MP4 or VOB files …. But I don't want something so user unfriendly that I have to take a full fledged course to understand what makes it NOT work. Also, I don't care about the streaming part because I plan on just piping it into my TV HDMI port. Thanks guys
