  3. It depends on what your source is, but most programs allow you to adjust this. I generally follow this guide for subtitles: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-main.htm. The VirtualDub VobSub plugin allows you to enter an x- and y-offset and also scale the text. VobSub needs an .ifo, .idx or .sub file . If you don't have any of those, I believe you can create the .sub file with a subripper program. Check out the guides here for more information: http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guides.htm

Just to make sure I understand your question correctly:
You wish to use downloaded subtextfile and to subtitle a downloaded .avi?

Well if this is the case, the timecode in the sub file must corresond to the time in the .avi. The subtitlerfilter in Vdub can handle timeoffsets, so with some tinkering you should be able to use a downloaded .ssa file. So the answer to the quiestion would be: Probably.

Is there a way to create the .ifo file? with what program?

  9. In Virtual Dub, You have to apply the smart resize filter first to create the black bands, then the subtitle filter. Your subtitles will then appear below the movie.
    Works for me.
