In China, most social networking sites (like facebook, youtube, etc) blog sites, and proxy sites are blocked. Recently, many fire sharing websites (like mediafire, fileden, etc) are also blocked.
To solve this problem, people talk about getting proxies and VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) that you pay for. My question is, what advantage does a paid proxy/VPN have over free ones? It seems to me that China can block the paid ones as easily as the free ones.
Please give me some insight on this topic.
Regarding the blocked file sharing website where I have stored my large files, most working proxies won't allow me to download my files. However, I did find one proxy that will allow me to download my large files. Are there very many proxies that allow you to download files?

The big difference between paid and free VPN/proxy networks is infrastructure and therefore speed. The free options usually rely on p2p to infrastructure, where individuals on the network provide most of the bandwidth, or they are provided by pay providers to get you in by giving you a taste at very slow speeds with the expectation that you will pay for a faster service. Good VPNs are encrypted, which makes it harder to block, although not impossible.

Another problem with free proxy servers is that you don't know what they are doing with your data.I would advise you to never use one for any online financial transactions. The paid proxy severs may be more dependable, but I would also check them to see if they are truly anonymous. Most will quickly surrender your file logs with a court order.
