I use the MakeMKV/BD Rebuilder/Imgburn process for backing up my blu-rays. However, from time to time MakeMKV will choose the wrong files. For instance, I was trying to back up the movie-only portion of my blu-ray copy of West Side Story, and instead of getting the "movie only", I got an "extra", the dances with commentary, and no "movie-only" files at all.

So how can I get the movie-only files instead of something else using MakeMKV? Thanks!

You could use BDInfo to check the Blu-ray before processing.
Once it IDs the main title, you could play parts of the first couple of .m2ts files and check that they are correct. (I use VLC)

I've had RipBot, VidCoder also chose the wrong main title.
Often the directors comment version is a bit longer or a bit larger and the programs may default to that.

I don't use MakeMKV, so I'm not sure how it chooses the correct title, unless it uses something like BDInfo.
I suspicion some BDs may be designed to confuse backup software.

Thanks redwudz! I tried BDinfo and chose the largest file (and checked it with VLC) for BD Rebuilder to reconstruct (or whatever it does) into a playable blu-ray, but the sound cut about 1/3rd of the way through on the final blu-ray. Don't know why. At any rate, I decided to just make a full backup with BD Rebuilder and sacrifice some quality to ensure that I get something that'll work. But I appreciate your input. I didn't know about BDInfo, and that's a handy tool.

If you or anyone finds a foolproof way of ensuring that BD Rebuilder always chooses the correct files for a "movie only" back up, that would be most helpful to know about. Thanks!

Well, decrypting using MakeMKV and thereafter using BD Rebuilder I did a "Full Backup" of West Side Story, but upon trying to play the blu-ray, I got a message that said

"Cannot Play Disc" and then a big red screen came up that said:

"Warning: Your blu-ray player requires an update in order to play this disc. Please visit your blu-ray player's manufacturers website and follow their instructions to update your blu-ray player. For additional information on Blu-ray player updates, please visit the Blu-Ray Update website at [url]http://blu-raydisc.com/ForBestResults. Twentieth Century Fox and MGM are not responsible for the content or practices of manufacturers websites. Each manufacturer controls and is responsible for its own website."

    I use a Sony Google TV NSZ-GT1 blu-ray player.

I wonder what the meaning of all that is? And I'm back to square one in trying to backup West Side Story. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Solved!!! Making a backup of West Side Story.

Originally I had problems making a backup of West Side Story. I used MakeMKV version 1.9.2 and used the "Backup" mode where files (NOT MKV files) are created that BD Rebuilder uses to reconstruct and shrink, to be followed by Imgburn using the BDMV and Certificate files to burn a playable blu-ray to a 25 GB blu-ray blank.

But the makers of that commercial blu-ray, knowingly or unknowingly, fixed it to where BD Rebuilder [NOT MakeMKV] chose the wrong file when using BD Rebuilder's "movie-only" mode. And there were numerous files from which to choose. So, on the advice of a redwudz, I downloaded something called "BD Info" and found the 2 files that matched the playing time of the original movie, as show on the IMDb website. Those were files #800 and #850. Once I pointed BD Rebuilder, using its "Alternate Movie-Only Output" mode to either of those files (and then used ImgBurn), it produced a very nice decrypted (thanks to MakeMKV) blu-ray backup of West Side Story.
