    how many times can you rec over the tape before it starts going bad?

    The possibility of a failed recording (which you can not do again) out-weighs the cost of using a new tape every time.

    depends on the quality of the tape to start with and the condition/quality of the tape mechanism in the camera it's used in. for unimportant stuff DV i've used a tape maybe a dozen times in a gl2 before i'd get a single dropout as there is some error correction built in. for HDV i only use a tape once. there is no margin for error. the problem will be the camera will not tell you when it's not recording properly to tape, there will just be garbage on playback.

    so db83 is has a point.

    I agree wholeheartedly. DV tape is cheap enough, so why take chances?
