Hi - I know this question has come up before and I have researched other threads related to same topic, but wanted to ask this and relate it specifically to what I'm trying to do (also, some of the threads I bring up are from 2004, etc) so maybe there's something new that I don't know about. At any rate, this people on this forum have always provided very helpful answers so I'm thinking that will be the case again.

So - subject says it all. I need to convert what an AVI in PAL format to MPG (DVD format) NTSC. That, of course, requires creating frames out of nowhere (going from 25 to 29.97), correct? There's no way around that is there?

Multiple steps here, I assume, AVI to MPG as well as PAL to NTSC. So, is the proper sequence:
    Convert AVI to MPG
    Demux MPG
Use dgpulldown to convert from 25 FPS to 29.97 FPS using the 3:2 method?
    Mux

Is that the way to go or should I convert PAL to NTSC first and then convert from AVI to MPG? Or something else?

    Thanks for ANY help.

AVStoDVD can do it; it uses DGpulldown automatically, as the need arises.
    Give it a try.

Actually there's some chance that you don't "need" to do this at all.

Most if not all DVD players that support AVI are perfectly capable of playing "PAL" AVI files, even in the USA. Philips makes such players and they also still make a few DVD players that can still be made region free and can send NTSC for all input video out to the TV they are connected to.

Unless this is a one time or two time thing to do this kind of conversion, your time would be better spent doing something else and just buying a DVD player that can handle the AVI files than to do this kind of conversion. You can expect some anomalies from the conversion process, particularly during motion scenes. I knew of a guy years ago who used to do this kind of conversion every week and I thought he was crazy to not just buy his relatives a converting DVD player rather than to do this kind of conversion every week. If this is going to be an ongoing thing, it's really not worth the effort to do this kind of conversion. And you should finally understand that by converting AVI to DVD you are converting from one lossy format to another and you're quite likely to suffer some quality loss as a result.
