Hello everyone. I have this avi file , which was recorded with camtasia program and after that converted into avi format. At a moment in time, i deleted this video by mistake, but was able to restore it with a program (Handy Recovery).. the problem is that i think its not been fully restored and its structure is possible to have been modified. Therefore, it wont open anymore with any movie player i tried (VLC, MP classic etc), even though its size is still the same as before deleting it (1,29Gb). Each time im trying, I get the message : "Cannot render the file". I tried repairing it with some programs, but with no luck. They all say that it has an unknown format and it cant be opened. Camtasia Studio also wont accept it anymore when i try to open it with it (Cannot open file...It is either an unsupported media type or required codecs are not found). My question is, could there any program help me open it ? I'm aware that some parts of it might have been deleted for good, but even if some fragments of this video would open, that would still help. Thanks
btw: at the moment of restoring this file after being deleted, i also restored some other ones that have been also recorded with camtasia .. some are working, others are not and some open with some dificulties. My expectations are not big for this particular video, im not hoping ill have it as good as before, but im sure that inside of this huge 1,29Gb video, there are still some parts that could be playable.

Perhaps give Photorec a try.
If this file is on your main drive, parts of it may have been overwritten by now.
Also, the size of the file, and the possibility it was in many non-contiguous clusters,
make recovery worse.

This program seems similar to Handy Recovery. But unfortunatelly i dont have access to that pc anymore. i managed to recover the avi videos from an old hard drive that crushed durring a transfer of files. so i assume my avi is heavinly corrupt. i just hope that there could be some program that might open the segments of my broken video somehow, or regroup some parts of it, cause the size is quite big.. so i think theres still video data over there that could be accessed somehow

Try looking at the file with a Hex editor. If it is mostly zeroes you just recovered a long bit of garbage. If it is long sections of zeroes with long sections of seemingly random stuff it is a corrupted file. File recovery of a fragmented file is very likely to produce garbage. IF only the header is missing you might be able to replace the header with a working header from a similar file with the hex editor.
While I usually use frhed it does not like large files so for them I use HxD. I just dumped a 1.4GB file into HxD and it went RIGHT in. Frhed would have stalled and then crashed. -
Hi jax123,
As suggested by Ethlred your file is simply corrupted. To figure out whether it could be repaired you could check it for free in MP4repair.org. Then decide if it's worth repair it.

I got a 70% repairing probability.. and a request of 69$ for them to repair it for me. as my life doesnt depend on this video, id better try and fix it myself lol. Elthlred suggested some good programs and i think thats the line i should follow. i tried HxD with some small results untill now. At least now i got a different error .. something about missing codecs. so i think thats a start and ill keep trying to get some more results. anyways, that program seems very complicated for a newbie like me.. but thanks alot guys for trying to help me with my problem
