Well originally the hope was the Thrawn trilogy by timothy zahn. But if the original cast is supposed to appear in it as themselves (as they are now) then that is out the window.

That's after the Back To The Future 2 time of October. We better have hover cars by then or Speilberg will have to answer to us!! (not to mention hoverboards ))

I guess I didn't flesh that out enough.

I think I was getting at that the future alternative reality would be closer to the time of the original movies (4-7) so that they would be younger than their current realtime age.

That was what they did with the star trek reboot. They did the time game so that the original Trek crew would be young and could be recast.

Edit - heck now that i think about it you wouldn't even have to do that - just start the text crawl at the beginning of the movie and say its five years after Return of the Jedi. Then just recast them if you wanted to go that way.
