Well, with J. J. Abrams, one should expect a lot of "flash", an insane amount of questions, very little answers to those questions, and even less "substance".

Good. It shows that Disney correctly realizes that Episodes 1 and 2 did an enormous amount of damage to the franchise and they simply cannot put Episode 7 in the hands of anyone that they don't have 100% confidence in. Abrams has shown he can deliver the goods and he'll be sure to avoid the bs that Lucas was infamous for like the Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks.

Better him than Lucas. Or almost anybody rather than Lucas. He really screwed the prequels with his special effects orgies. As if that could make up for stilted, silly dialogue. IIRC, he himself stated he wanted to get in as many effects as possible. Totally wrong-headed.
Episode two was particularly bad. "The worst thing ever made by a human":

So, how bad could it be with Abrams directing? I'm willing to keep an open mind about it.
I offer my apologies to Yoda for the above.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

If the choice was to favor clean, lean, and direct, with great forward momentum, I'd vote for Joss Whedon far over Abrams. (Check out "Serenity", if you've never seen it.) But I expect that's a minority opinion, and not nearly commercial enough for a huge tentpole item like this.

I don't mind special effects, what I have a problem with is there is very little thought process on the plot with a lot of the latest releases.
...And they invariably have that stupid mushy ending.... -
@fritzi 93 -no offense taken. i have defended the prequels as much as im going to. they are what they are. i dont love them as much as the originals but i dont hate them like others do. you are welcome to your opinions and i am done defending thme with vigor. i just dont like it when people call them horrible. whatch a mystery science theater 3000 movie before you call something horrible.
as far as jj abrams if true i would support it. i liked the reboot star trek and plan to see into darknesss this year. i thought he did a good job honoring star trek while still going in a diffferent direction. he didnt lampoon it so i excpect similar treatment with star wars - make changes but keep the spirit alive and stay true to the original vision of the franchise.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I'm not too particularly familiar with Abrams' work. The only two movies from him I've seen are his Star Trek reboot, which IMHO was all balls and no brains, and Super 8, which I have little memory of. Ultimately, I was really hoping for James Cameron. Time has proven him as one of the best directors of all time. Peter Jackson would also have been a good choice. Of course, both directors are involved in their own franchises.
Also, although Jar Jar isn't my favorite character, I've never actually hated him. To this day, I wonder why people are sowhen they talk about him.
The prequels weren't bad, either, IMHO. Yes, they did have a lot of special effects, but so did the originals! In both cases, though, the effects in and of themselves, were not what defined the films they were in, which was more than I could say for the Star Trek reboot.
