Is there a way to remove the gray box and keep the subtitles outlined?

If I apply complete transparency with DVDSubEdit, the box disappears of course but then the text is not outlined and therefore less readable in light screens.
Changing white to yellow slightly improved the readability but still was not satisfactory.

The colors in the CLUT are
    b White 15 (text)
    p Gray 15
    e1 Black 6 (box)
    e2 Black 0 (background)

    Thank you for your help

Keep them outlined? They're not outlined to begin with so there's nothing to keep. The only thing I can think of is to OCR them to text-based subs and recreate the subs with outlines this time. Then add them back into the movie when reauthoring.

Thank you for your reply, manono.
That's what I feared, but expected. But I thought I would ask before starting working on it.
Your help is much appreciated, as always.
