  1. I am burning SVCDs using Nero 5.5.... SVCD template.

When I put the SVCD in, the display still indicates VCD.
It loads then stops and wait.

If I push play, I sometime gets the Still picture/Menu, sometime just a black screen. From there, in both case, if I push the menu number then the corresponding movie plays fine.

If I start by pushing the Menu button instead of play then the 1st movie starts playing without going through the menu first.

If I do not put any still picture/menu on the disk, then the SVCD refuses to play.

The Samsung DVD 1000 Combo is reported to be OK with SVCD and a lot of other formats on this site.

Anybody out there with similar problems and/or workaround ?

  3. Yes:

Use VirtualDub to capture, filter & resize
then I either use TMPGEnc or CCE to create the Mpg
then I use Nero to burn the SVCD

Nothing really out of the ordinary.

  4. FranckV,

I have the same Samsung player, and have had similar problems.
I one point I even took it in for service to see if I got a bad unit.
I did my testing quite a while ago, but here is what I remember:

    - SVCD never would show up on the display (at best VCD 2.0)

    - I generally used I-Author to make menus, these would work
only about 10% of the time on the sammy.

    - If I put a black image first that then moves to the movie everything
seems to play just fine. Easy to do with I-Author or VCDImage.

    - I could never get subtitles to work but I can get multiple soundtracks.

All in all, the play quality of my Sammy is great. It doesn't seem to
really support SVCD. It works as if it is playing MPEG2 VCDs.
It does seem to have great error handling if it decides to play a disk.
I've had DVDs that I can't read and rip on my computer because
they had bad scratches and smudges on them, but the sammy just
played right thru the bad spots.

I'm getting into some new testing lately for my GE5803p. I'd be happy
to give you more info on my sammy, if it helps.

  5. Thanks for your reply.

    Here is some more information:

I did a factory reset on the Samsung player (hold ffw & rew down for 4 seconds).

I started using Ulead DVD Movie factory to make the menus and burn my SVCDs, works great on the Samsung. The display still reports a VCD but on the TV screen, it reports SVCD 2.0.

I still cannot get Nero SVCDs to work consistently, sometimes the menus work, sometimes they don't. Too bad cause I prefer the Nero menus than the Ulead ones.

  6. I remember reading a while ago all of the problems with Nero menus.
I'm not sure what version this was. The GUIs that front VCDImager are supposed to make it easy to create SVCD compliant menus. I'll do a test and let you know. (I'm not holding my breath. I've never been able to get menus to work consistently.) I don't have Ulead.

You must be using S-Video to connect your tv to the sammy. The format
displays only seem to show thru the s-video connect.

I did figure out how to do time search on SVCDs last night, it's
probably in the manual but I didn't think you could do it with the sammy.
haha tothe Pioneer owners out there.

I also noticed with DVD2SVCD (never really used it before but It's great!)
that there is an option for CVD and SVCD sub titles. I've always made
CVD subs with I-Author. These don't work. I'm trying some SVCD
    ones tonight.

Boy, the more I play with the sammy, the more I like it. If I can get
menus to work it might move back down stairs to the Family room.

BTW: - If you are brave, there is a factory control button behind the
front cover near the DVD buttons. Check out this link:
    http://www.zyworld.com/ImaWeTodd/V1000.pdf
That's a Samsung PDF on some factory adjustments. Now don't
let me mislead you that I know what I'm talkn about, (after all
imawetodd) but the stuff at the end sure does look like region code
settings. Who knows, maybe there is even a way to disable macrovision.

  7. I am using the YCrCb connection.

Menus definitely work great with Ulead. You can download a 30 day fully operationnal demo from their web site.

How do you do time search ?

  8. FrankV,

Thanks for the Tip on Ulead!

Hope I get a chance to give it a try....

I now have my machine connected to an old TV using the cable out.
If you do that you don't seem to get as much info on the screen.
I've also used the RCA connections and you also don't get the SVCD 2.0
    and other stuff displayed. Strange??

I did the subtitle test and still could not get SVCD subs to work. Maybe
I'll downld the example SVCD subs from VCDHelp and give it a try.

    On the Time search....
I don't remember how all of the buttons are labled but they are the
"joystick" buttons. I'll refer to them as left/right/top/bottom/center if
    I can't remember their lable:

    1) I played the movie (I believe PBC must be on)
    2) Press Display (top button)

At this point, the track number and a time are displayed. The track
has a > character next to it.

    3) Press the next/skip (right button) The > moves to the time.
    4) Enter in a new time with the number keys
    5) Press enter (the center button) and You jump to that time!

It's good to know someone else is having luck with the DVD1000.

    Thanks
