I have a number of large mkv files (some larger than 8gb) on my hard disk which I want to split and backup on recordable DVD+R media. Is mkvmerge a safe tool to achieve this? I have tried splitting one file and then joining the parts together, but the resulting file does not have the same checksum (md5) as the original mkv file (which was also created in mkvmerge). Is this something to worry about? If I need to join parts in the future will the resulting file be the same as the original?

Joining may sometimes cause some problems.

You can instead use winrar or 7zip and split to volumes. Use no compression for fastest splitting/storaging. You should then get EXACT same file when you extract/join it. But you may not be able to play it directly from the DVDR....I guess VLC and PotPlayer support winrared files.

No, that's to be expected. Even muxing one file twice will produce different files. see: https://trac.bunkus.org/wiki/FAQ%3ACreatingByteIdenticalFiles

the content should be the same but, the container will be different, see above.

  4. Matroska has one not much talking about feature , ordered chapters and segment linking where you can split mkv and matroska can see what to play next. Problem is that that you need right splitter maybe for that I guess, like haali , hardware players will ignore those I think. Just one of those things well designed but never used?
