As a complete newbie in video editing you may excuse my questions that may sound silly to you:
I had 15-year old Hi 8 cassettes converted by a professional (which cost me a hell of a money) to .avi files. Unfortunately he used a codec that does not match my software (Magix Video deluxe MX18 plus) and the codec I found (Canopus codec from 1999, Canopus discontinued) on the web canŽt be installed under windows 7 64-bit.
So IŽm trying to convert with Any Video Converter to a format that I can process in my editing software with minor quality losses.
The source is 720x576, 25FPS. IŽve been told that editing software prefers to work on avi-files. So AVC gives me the chance to convert to a "user-defined AVI-file". So far so good. But too many choices for me. Which codec should I choose ? The video size I would leave at 720x576. But Video Bitrate, Audio codec and so on ? IŽm experimenting a bit but this is quite time consuming. Is there a "replacemet codec" available for the not working canopus codec ?
Any recommendation what to do ?
Thanks in advance,
elubitsch

It's a run of the mill DV avi file. Very surprised your software doesn't recognize it.
Check the tools section at the upper left. The Canopus codec is available as well as a caonupus DV file converter utility. (Can't speak to how well they actually work.)
you can always use another DV codec like Cedocida.Last edited by smrpix; 29th Dec 2012 at 09:22.

Yep. Try install https://www.videohelp.com/tools/Cedocida-DV-Codec

Thanks so much to both of you.
Unfortunately none of the above works.
The Canopus codec can not be installed on my system (Win 7 64bit) and the Canopus DV File Converter says "The source file can not be converted by this application"
After installing the Cedocida Codec the Program still says "Please install a codec capable of decoding the CDVC format"
IŽd even undergo the procedure of converting my 15 .avi files (225 GB !) with Any Video Converter but I wouldnŽt know the setting of "user defined .avi" and I still fear a loss of quality.
Any more ideas ? -
All you need to do is change the fourcc of the current file from CDVC to DVSD, and all the STANDARD, already-installed DV codecs (including the default one for Directshow) should play, edit and/or convert it fine.
For that, try AVI FOURCC Code Changer.

Thanks,
AVI FourCC Changer unfortunately didnŽt work
It recognized the file as CDVC but only offered the options of changing it to MP41, MP42, MP43 or DIV3.
Tried all four options (on copies of the file of course........) and got sound but no picture.
IŽll keep on trying, next IŽll try to convert with Baldricks Idea of the various converters and then come back to publish my results.
Maybe I should pay the expensive "professional" a visit and ask him to reconvert to a readable file format ..........
Have a nice day -

Baldrick - you are a genius!
It works !
It was really that simple as to type DVSD manually.
tried it on two of my 15 files and thatŽs it.
Thank you so much !
Regards,

P.S.
IŽll still keep copies of the original files ................. -
Sorry,
thanks to Cornucopia also who gave the hint on FourCC Changer !
Happy New Year to all of you !
