No region hack for this player. -
snooze1956 - You mentioned region 4. Do you live in Australia? We've had reports that Australians who contact the Australian support staff for various major manufacturers sometimes get them to provide secret unlock information that only works on Aussie devices. So contact Panasonic's Australian support staff and see if they can help you. However, do note that there is always some possibility that you won't get help. Panasonic is not what they used to be and if they don't have any Australian support staff, they may not be interested in helping you. As a general rule, DVD recorders usually can't be made region free. And anything made by Sony or Samsung these days probably won't ever be able to be unlocked either. Just something to keep in mind for the future.

Try a Google search for; panasonic dmr-ex79 multi region
You'll see there are a number of pages which say the dmr-ex79 can be made multiregion and how to go about it. It looks like the EX79, like other Panasonic DVRs, can only be made multiregion using a specialist IR remote control. You can hire one of these remotes to make the changes*.
*I haven't gone down this route and don't know how reliable this method is/whether you can get a refund if it doesn't work, etc.
If you wanted a multi-region machine, why didn't you buy one that was already multi-region! amazon.co.uk lists region free Panasonic DMR- machines:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Multi-Region-Panasonic-DMR-EZ48VEBK-Up-Conversion/dp/B0036ZXEPE
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMR-EX83EB-K-Recorder-Freeview-Included/dp/B0049OKIM8
As jman98 says, your success in making it multiregion probably depends on the region you bought the player. I'd add Europe next to Australia as a market where DVD players have a better chance of being made multi-region. The USA - not so much... -
I don't keep up with Panasonic, but intracube's post reminded me of a nasty discussion I got into here a few weeks ago with a Norwegian guy about Panasonic players. There's no point in trying to contact Panasonic support if this is one of those players that needs a special IR remote control. You'll have to buy one and hope it works. The Norwegian guy was swearing that the chance of such a remote not working to unlock your player was essentially impossible, a point that I had a problem with. All I can tell you is that you spends your money and you takes your chances, as they say.

You don't say where you live. However, I can confirm that in New Zealand if you take a Panasonic DVD player/recorder into the Panasonic service agent, they will de-zone it for you free of charge. Essentially, it's the only way Panasonic can compete here - pretty much everyone else (even the verminous, rabidly anti-consumer, Sony) sell their players region free.
