Night vision

I've had a Sony Handycam DCR-SR62 for years now and the nightshot works ok but I want something more powerful. I was looking at video cameras online but none of them seem to have a night vision much more powerful than my Handycam already has. I want something that will work good outside in the middle of the night. I would like a camera recommendation or if you think an IR illuminator will be enough to do the trick recommend one as well.

you'll need a gofer to chase around behind you pointing a high powered ir light no matter what you use.

real night vision use FLIR techniques - very expensive stuff...
