Which is better Hauppauge Colossus or the Grass Valley ADVC55 for capturing VHS tapes to a digital format?
The videos won’t be burned to DVD or Blu-Ray or edited, just stored on HDD. Which format is better to store the videos, H.264 using Hauppauge Colossus or DV-AVI using AVDC-55. Also how is using the Hauppauge Colossus hidden TBC feature?

I cannot offer comparisons as I have no DV-AVI experience. The TBC of the Colossus works fine for me. I used it to successfully capture an old VHS tape that had the video bent in the top third of the screen (I do not know the technical term for this). The display of my tape was steady and showed no bending with the TBC on. I have also captured some commercial VHS tapes that I think are Macrovision protected, but I have no way to test this.
