What do you mean with "outside of the network" ?

If you are looking for a home media server that simply streams files and external sources (like youtube videos) to your home devides then take a look here.

If you need to stream your contents to devices outside your home LAN, then you probably need to set-up a real internet streaming server like Wowza, AdobeMedia Server, IIS with Windows Media Services, Red5, crtmpd (just google them).
This may not be a trivial task.

I used to use TVersity, but it hasn't been much good for a long time.

I use Serviio now and it's one of the best I've seen. In the new 1.0 release, they added a Pro version that includes web browser player and an app to play your media via android devices from anywhere.

Plex looks like it might be good, but I haven't tried it.
