Corel is on an NLE shopping spree. After snapping up Roxio in February, they're now acquiring Pinnacle from Avid.

I still haven't forgiven Corel for buying Ulead just to let its best product, DVD Workshop, die.

I turned away from Roxio a long time ago, when their otherwise promising early 2000's VideoWave was left agonizing with a crippling audio sync defect which made it unusable.

Anyone who tried to use Pinnacle in the previous decade was first attracted by its clean and relatively intuitive interface, but ended up with a lot less hair than when they began.

So now whither the NLE marketplace?

Corel has always garbage-picked software after it reached end-of-life status. Pinnacle 15 was the last version, Avid has gone to their own name product now and dropped the Pinnacle line. So now we know why.... Avid used Pinnacle as a working model to get all the bugs out (thus your "hair-tearing" comment), then when they finally felt confident in it they started the "new" line with the mother corporation's name on it. Roxio was another one that was in old age and not taken seriously anymore. Remember Word Perfect? Another Corel purchase.

  3. People forget that Corel is just a name since it got bought in 03 by a VC firm; it's not surprising they take an old product (cheap) and suck every bit of revenue out of it.

They probably ended up with Roxio after Sonic Solutions got snagged by Rovi (the new name for macrovision); parting with whatever doesn't fit their business.

    Roxio isn't an NLE.
Intervideo was another brand plundered by Corel.

Most of these tasks are better done with freeware or Adobe software anyway.
    So not a big deal.
