I assume you want the audio from a video file.

WMV is a video file. WMA is the audio only portion.

Use windows media encoder and the stream editor. If I remember right this is how you extract the audio portion of the file.

Other option is to use virtualdub and use the directshowsource option to open the file - then select file-save wav to get a wav file from it.

Other option is to play the file in realtime and record with an editor that can record "what u hear" from your soundcard - audacity should do the trick.

Edit - assuming of course this isn't a drm'd video. If this is a home made video than the above will work.

If its drmd your only option is to play the file in the authorized media player and then record the audio in realtime with a sound program that record what u hear (as I mentioned audacity). If it has drm you can't process it like a normal file as it protected against just such a procedure. But the realtime recording will work.

  4. Almost all Video converters could change it.
You could try DVDFab Video Converter or Full Video Converter Free

those tools are easier to use than windows media encoder

  5. Turn off the "Hide extensions for known file types" option in Explorer. You will then see filename extensions and you can use Rename to change them.

While the containers for both are identical (ASF), so renaming SHOULD work, MS specifies that WMA is to be used for Audio-only programs and WMV for Video-only or VIdeo+Audio programs.
With that in mind, I don't know how some players would react to getting a "WMA" that also has video in it.

Do NOT "convert" using ANY converter - you don't need to.

Use WM Streams editor (utility that comes with WME). Don't even need WME, just the streams editor. Open the V+A file, pick the A stream, post it to the target stream(s), name the file and process. SHould be very quick and you have your clean, original WMA.

I think yoda's right ... sounds like you want to extract the audio.

My preferred tool to yank the audio from video files is xmedia recode. It doesn't need extra non microsoft codecs, which is a requirement for me.

I haven't done that with wmv's using xmedia recode but I've done it lots of times to get aac audio from mp4's. Works great ... a number of programs will extract aac but won't put it in a container, which seriously limits the usefulness.

If you do try it I'd suggest version 3.0.6.7.
