vcd's with crappy sound and picture

I downloaded 3 seinfeld episodes in avi format and used tmpgenc to convert them to vcd, and then burned it using nero 5.5, but I get a really bad picture and the sound is all messed up when I try to play it in my DVD player (which is vcd compatible). Any help?

As you didn't mention which settings you used I presume you used the standard VCD template. If so did you also use the "high quality" position in "motion search precision"? People have also often reported about bad sound if they used the same source file in video and audio source - better to split them (de-mux) them before encoding.
