Hi Guys- I got a lil problem...

My win 7 laptop got a batch of auto-updates today. Didn't know about it until I went to shut down and saw that yellow shield.

When I went to restart later, I also got the typical blue screen that said

Do not Turn Off or unplug your machine.
    Installing update 1 of 8.

Well, a couple hours later it got to update 8 of 8, and has been stuck there for hours.
The HD light flashes a bit, and some of those malware updates can take a while, but this is ridiculous.
The HD is not anywhere near full, and nothing was running when shut down. I tried disconnecting from the wifi, but that made no difference.

So what happens if I just shut the system down?

This si reminds me of Windows 95...

Depending on the patch, it could render your system unbootable. Then again, since it seems that the patch has likely failed, it may ALREADY be unbootable. Ask yourself before you shut it down "Do you feel lucky, punk?" If you do, then roll the dice and shut it down. If you have the ability to fix a serious problem yourself you might just go for it. Auto-updates are risky and each user needs to decide for his/herself if he/she feels the gain outweighs the risk of your situation happening to them.

since it's already crashed there is absolutely no reason not to push the power button until it turns off. the worst that is likely to have happen is a notice that a single update has failed. it happens to all systems occasionally and all you need to do is go back to microsoft update and try again. most likely it will work the second time.

Simply a stalled system and nothing more.

Hold the power button down till it turns off then reboot into safe mode and use system restore to return to a point prior to updating.

    Then :

Go to the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Data Store ...Find the file called ‘DataStore.edb’ and delete it.

Go to the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Logs and delete everything in here.

Go to the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download and delete everything; you can choose ‘Edit, Select All’ then ‘Delete’ from the toolbar at the top.

Go to the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/EventCache and delete all you see.

    Reboot.
